| Having eczema, psoriasis, acne, sensitive or allergic skin means it can
be challenging to keep the condition under control. And for many, it can mean
sensitivity to a range of product ingredients. That's why we list every ingredient
in every product we stock, so you can see exactly what's in each product before
you order.
Many of our suppliers conform to certain standards and have the authority to use specific trademark logos on their products. The three main logos you will see on the packaging of many of the products we sell are detailed below. You can click on each individual logo to find out more.
Below is a list of some of the ingredients that may cause
skin irritation in some people. However, this is not an exhaustive list and the ingredients listed may not irritate everyone.
SLS/Sodium Lauryl Sulphate/Sodium
Laureth Sulphate
SLS/Sodium Laueth Sulfate/SLES is a detergent widely
used in shampoos and other foaming personal care products. It doesn't affect everyone,
but It can cause skin and eye irritation for some people. It is advisable to discontinue
use of such products containing this group of ingredients if such symptoms appear.
Parabens/Preservatives Parabens such as methylparaben, propylparaben, ethylparaben,
and butylparaben are synthetic preservatives used in personal care products such
as shampoos/conditioners, nail creams, facel masks, skin creams, and deodorants.
They can also be found in baby lotions, shampoos, and other personal care products
for children. Again, they will not irriate everyone, but in some cases they can
cause discomfort.
Perfume/Fragrance
Perfumes can cause allergy
and irritation for some people, and in skincare products this can manifest itself
in watery eyes, red irritated skin and allergic reactions. When this happens it is usually an adverse reaction to artificial fragrance rather than natural fragrance.
Contains Organic Ingredients
Just because it says 'Organic' on the label doesn't necessarily mean
it is! For example, when applied to bread products, organic means that at least
95% of the ingredients are of organic origin. However, if you see this on a shampoo
label it can mean that as little as 1% is actually organic, unless the percentage
of organic ingredients is stated, of course! That's why it's important to check
all labels. Aluminium
Some people believe that it is
better to use deodorants that are aluminium free, although more research is needed
into the implications of using deodorants containing aluminium, particularly with regard to the theory that using deodorants with aluminium may be linked with breast cancer. When we sweat,
we expel toxins from our bodies. By using deodorants containing aluminium this
process can be blocked for some people and the body can then find it difficult
to completely detox. Lanolin Lanolin is a chemical found
in wool and derived from the sebum/skin grease the sheep makes and secretes on
to its wool. Manufacturers of skin care products extract it from the wool and
use it in a wide variety of ways, such as in skin creams as it helps to keep the
skin smooth and soft. However, some people will be sensitive to lanolin and may
not tolerate it in skin and personal care products. Please be
aware that we strongly recommend you patch test any new product on a small
area of skin (good places to test are inside the upper arm or behind the ear)
at least 24 hours before you intend to apply the product to larger areas. If you
are in any doubt about using a new product, we strongly recommend you speak to
your doctor or specialist.
